Sample Sales Galore

Today fellow friend/blogger Steph and I are headed to some sweet sample sales.

Erin Fetherston ($10 runway shoes!), Foley and Corinna and Rebecca Minkoff are all on the list.

My most recent sample sale purchase is the “Girls on Film” print dress by Built By Wendy….for only $40! She’s a Brooklyn designer who has always been a staple in my wardrobe because of her simplicity and timeless cuts. Check out the dress:

Wish us luck. Will be posting our finds shortly.

Mixing patterns is something I’m new to. I remember in high school feeling as if mixing houndstooth with florals or stripes with dots was taboo. This trend has got me excited, however, because most of my favorite clothing and accessories are patterned. Polka dot tights in black are a simple way to begin mixing prints. Not only is black a basic color, the polka dots have a bit of whimsy too. Just keep the rest of the outfit basic to let the patterns be the focal point of your look. For more experienced pattern-mixers, try combining different types of florals or plaids and stripes.
Shirt (H&M) $4
Tights (H&M) $9
Jean Shorts (no label) $4

Early fall is the time for trousers. These are perhaps my favorite pair: khaki, high-waisted, pleated and cuffed. They epitomize the ”grandma chic” I go for everyday. I came upon these at a Salvation Army in Boston for a mere $7.99. Love wearing them with my thrifted short black lace-up boots which I also got at Salvation Army for $6.99.
I snagged the circular scarf from H&M for $13, which can also double as a hood (for those favorite jackets without them!). Although it took me a little bit to get used to wrapping it around my head just the right way, It’s a lot easier than a traditional scarf because it doesn’t slip off my neck. It can also be used in lieu of a necklace to jazz up an outfit. If you’re feeling frugal, grab some knitting needles and make your own!

I love the idea of a long-sleeved lace shirt. Layer it under a button down or sweater, wear it monochromatically with a pop of color, dress it up or dress it down. Lace is feminine, yet edgy. I love the starkness of blood red against black lace. Although black can be a dreary color, nothing livens it up like crimson.
(This is the beginning of a solo series from your lovely female contributor. Look forward to less formal musings on color, cut and style, and of course my favorite thrifted pieces).
